Common sleep challenges I help with

Whether you're dealing with constant night waking, bedtime battles, or nap struggles that rule your day, you're not alone. And what ever your child’s sleep challenges are, it’s not your fault. Temperament plays a big part in how easily children find it to fall sleep and stay asleep. Some children need more tailored support and fine tuning than others to get there. That’s ok.

Sleep can (and will) get easier. And you can feel more confident and more rested. This is exactly what I help families achieve, in a gentle, responsive way that works for you and your child.

Transitioning from co-sleeping

Co-sleeping is great when it works for everyone. But there are lots of reasons that might mean you’d like to make the transition to your little one sleeping in their own space.

Maybe you're spending every night feeling really uncomfortable, but afraid to move. Perhaps you're expecting a new baby and want to make the transition beforehand. Or maybe you simply need your own space back. Whatever your reason for moving things on, it will be completely valid.

Whether your child is a baby, toddler, or school-aged, I can help you navigate the transition responsively and gently. We'll move step by step, ensuring your child feels confident and supported as they learn to sleep independently in their own space so you can all get the sleep you need.

Sleep regressions

Sleep is rarely linear, and it’s really normal for things to go up and down in the first few years of life (and beyond!)

But sometimes it can feel like sleep is going from bad to worse, and thought of waiting it out indefinitely just feels like too much.

The good news is that you don’t have to choose between waiting it out, or using stressful cry-it-out sleep training techniques.

By looking at the different factors that might be impacting your little one’s sleep, we’ll develop a wider understanding your child’s sleep, and put in place strategies to help them become the best sleeper they can be, both now, and in the future.

Frequent night waking

You know that it’s normal for small people to need to check in with their parent in night. But if you’re up every hour, or the wake ups are often long, then night time parenting can be really hard.

By looking at sleep from different angles, we’ll unpick what might be leading to the frequent wakes, and put in place strategies to help encourage those longer stretches.

As well as this, I can help you establish strategies for resettling in the night that are responsive, effective, and manageable for you as a parent.

No more feeling anxious about what the night ahead will hold. By the end of the month, you’ll be getting longer stretches, and feeling much more confident (and rested!)

Difficulty settling at bedtime

For most people (children and adults), taking around 15 minutes to fall asleep at bedtime works well. But there can be barriers to sleep, and it’s not that easy for some of us to nod off.

Spend hours in the dark bedroom, feeding, rocking and bouncing, willing your child to go to sleep is really hard. It definitely doesn’t need to be this way though.

Together, we’ll look at your child’s sleep pressure, circadian rhythm, evening routine, as well as effective settling strategies that will help make bedtime feel easy (and even enjoyable!).

Finally, you’ll be able to have an evening of your own to catch up with your partner, get that mountain of jobs done, or just flop in front of some Netflix (and watch a whole episode!)

Nap struggles

If your child doesn’t nap easily, the days can feel dominated by trying to get them to sleep. You might miss out classes because you know they won’t nap well if you’re out. But then, if you stay home, you might spend ages trying to get them to sleep, only for them to have a 15 minute cat nap, or worse still, no nap at all!

When we work on naps, I’ll never tell you to stay at home every day to get into a “perfect” routine, or practise cot naps all day. Research shows that this can actually back-fire!

Instead, we’ll work out your child’s individual sleep needs, and create a routine that gives you the flexibility and confidence to enjoy life and get out and about when you want.

And if you’d like to help your child get used to new way of napping, I can help you with that too, taking it one nap at a time.

Bedtime battles

Sleep is a form of separation, and for some children, going to bed and falling asleep can feel really hard, even with their parent right there with them.

As well as this, toddlers and older children might start pushing back at every step of the bedtime routine and even for the most patient parents, it can be hard to keep our cool.

Bedtimes don’t need to be a battle though. Through positive parenting strategies and focussing on connection and power in the lead you to bedtime, I’ll help you turn things around so that bedtimes become a time you actually look forward to, for both you and your little one!

Happy sleep stories

In the thick of sleep deprivation, it can be hard to believe that things will ever change.

Trust me though, they can and will. Here are just a couple of stories from parents I’ve supported that I hope give you that hope. However tough things are at the moment, there will be a light at the end of the tunnel, I promise!

Ashley & Charley
Parents enjoying a seaside walk after better sleep
We were hesitant about getting help for our baby’s sleep, but after hourly wake-ups from 6 to 16 months, we were at our wits’ end. We just wanted our baby to sleep in his own cot and reduce the number of wake-ups.

We were drawn to Louise because she’s so person-centred and clearly tailors her plans to each baby and family, rather than a one-size-fits-all approach. She was calm, non-judgmental and easy to talk to, helping us use gentle techniques that got our baby comfortable falling asleep by himself so quickly.

We were genuinely shocked by how fast things changed. The techniques were so subtle and we never left our baby to cry alone once. Now he sleeps through the night, in his own room, and loves his nap. We couldn’t recommend Louise more!

We contacted Louise after struggling for months with our son’s sleep. He was 15 months old — it was a battle getting him to sleep, and he woke 3–7 times a night wanting milk. We were exhausted.

Louise helped us develop better sleep habits and tweak our bedtime routine. He’s now sleeping through the night for 12 hours and napping for 2 hours in the afternoon — amazing!

The best thing was her gentle approach. I hated the idea of sleep training because I didn’t want to leave my son to cry, but that isn’t Louise’s approach at all. Thank you, Louise!!

FAQs

  • Yes, it is! I know how much parents value this support, and this is why I make it limitless for the month. During the course of the month that we’re working together, you can book in to my calendar for a Zoom or phone call whenever you need. I have daytime, weekend and evening availability throughout the week, so we can speak at a time that works for you. We’ll use these calls to celebrate your successes, talk through any challenges you’ve experienced, and give you steps to carry forward.

As well as telephone and Zoom support, we’ll have a What’s App group set up so that you can stay in touch 7 days a week. I’ll reply to messages as soon as possible, (always within 12 hours), giving you access to all the information you need as you put your plan into place.

  • Breastfeeding at night is completely normal and natural, but everyone has their limits, and if you’ve been feeding every hour or two at night for months on end, it’s not surprising that you’re exhausted.

Firstly, if your baby is under 6 months and you’re feeding hourly, I’d recommend that you speak to an IBCLC (lactation consultant). Sometimes, sleep issues are a symptom of a feeding problem such as a shallow latch, tongue tie, reflux or allergy, so it’s important to ensure that there aren’t any underlying issues at play.

If you’re happy that your child is generally feeding well, but their night feeds feel too frequent, then I can help you with this. You don’t need stop breastfeeding completely or introduce formula in order to improve sleep.

When we work together, I’ll talk you through strategies to help optimise your child’s sleep and increase the chances of them sleeping for longer stretches at night. As well as this, I’ll talk you through methods you can use to gently introduce other ways of settling, so that you can have an alternative to feeding when your child wakes. Also, if your partner has previously struggled to settle your child (which is really common), I can talk them through strategies that they can use, so that  night time parenting can be shared between you a little more and some of the weight lifted off your shoulders.

  • If you want to make changes either to where your baby sleeps, how you are settling them, or how you respond in the night, I’d suggest you have at least 3-4 weeks where you can be at home at night and be consistent in your approach.

However, I know that 3-4 weeks can feel like a lifetime when you’re utterly exhausted! So, if you’d like to make a start on some easier tweaks that are likely to make a positive impact straight away, you can book your sleep package now and have the initial consultation straight away. During this call, we can discuss the easier changes you can make now, so that you can start making progress straight away. As well as helping you get some quick results, we’ll also be able to talk through some strategies to help sleep happen as easily as possible while you’re away.

You can pause the support while you’re away, and get started back when you’re home to make the bigger changes to the middle of the night settling. With this, you get the best of both worlds! It’s worked really well for families that I’ve done this with before. If you’d like to talk it through before booking, just book a discovery call and we can discuss your plans.

  • You’re definitely not alone - lots of parents reach out at the 8-12 month stage when they are about to return to work and I have extensive experience in supporting parents through this transition.

I would recommend my Gold package. With this, we can take things in stages, and work at a pace that is right for both you and your child. We’ll often start with focusing on optimising sleep as much as possible, with a particular focus on attachment, and supercharging your little one’s buckets of love and attention before bed. Often these small changes can bring about big positive changes to the night. From here, if needed, we can work on reducing feeds or introducing alternative settling methods. I’ll be there to guide you every step of the way with limitless support, helping you both get the sleep you need so that you feel your best entering this new chapter in life!

  • This is exactly why I offer a month of support with the Gold package. Over the course of a month, it’s inevitable that there will be a runny nose, and illness or a tooth coming through.  With a month of support, I’ll be able to help you navigate the ups and downs that can affect your child’s sleep, so that you feel confident to handle these challenges as your child gets older. If your child is more seriously ill (e.g. has a high temperature), we can pause the month of support, and restart when your child is better again.
